Last week we talked about the prayer life of Jesus, our Savior, counting nine specific times we find Him praying. Prayer was more than just a spiritual discipline in His life, it was His life. He prayed first, last, and throughout His days. He prayed when He was discouraged and when He was rejoicing. He prayed both publicly and privately and taught His disciples to pray. And, His prayers for us continue this very day:
“Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.” Hebrews 7:25 ESV
So, as promised, here is a list of eleven ways we are transformed as we follow in His steps. Just like the nine times that Jesus prayed in our last email, this is just a starting point, but I hope it will whet your appetite for more:
1. Prayer teaches our hearts and minds to long for God’s power and glory. Matthew 6:13
2. Prayer is the principal means by which Christ’s kingdom advances. Matthew 6:10
3. Prayer releases the mercies of God in times of desperate need. Genesis 18:26-32
4. Prayer expands our understanding of the greatness of our God. Jeremiah 33:3
5. Prayer shows us God’s power and plan to humble the proud. Proverbs 29:33
6. Prayer shows us His power and purpose to lift up the humble. James 4:6
7. Prayer brings us close—draw near to Him and He will draw near to you. James 4:8
8. Prayer increases our understanding and broadens our perspective. Psalm 121
9. Prayer changes the way we think from shallow to deep and eternal. Romans 12:1-2
10. Prayer brings joy to replace our sorrows, and peace to replace turmoil. Phil. 4:4-6
11. Prayer gives us generous hearts to live and give like Jesus.
