If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love.”
Stevie Wonder
Our Women in the Window International team just returned from the Horn of Africa and, although our plane landed a few days ago, we are still flying high. We partner with the Women of the Good News, Africa Inland Church. These women leaders are often referred to as “Mama’s” which is not only a term of endearment, but a term of great honor and respect. These Mama’s embody all of the qualities Stevie Wonder mentioned above. Many of these Mama’s have experienced the horrors of war along with the deprivation of poverty and persecution. They received our WiW Advocacy training in basic human rights and inductive Bible study with deep gratitude. They left with well-defined and strongly determined action plans that will enable them to impart these same biblical principles and basic human rights to those they serve.
We often take much for granted here in the United States, but these women experience violence and violation of their basic human rights on a regular basis. Their joy was palpable as they understood that they have basic human rights which include:
- The right to life
- The right to equality
- The right to liberty and security of person
- The right to equal protection under the law
- The right to be free from all forms of discrimination
- The right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health
- The right to just and favorable conditions of work
- The right not to be subjected to torture, or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
By understanding their basic human rights and how to access the protection they not only need but deserve, they are able to experience and promote peace. These Mama’s are better equipped to fulfill the Gospel message to bring good news to the poor, bind up the brokenhearted and set captives free.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day please pray for these “Mama’s” who embody compassion, love and fearlessness to spread the good news as His ambassadors of peace in a land of conflict! May the fragrant and sweet aroma of Christ’s love waft through your home as you honor the Mama’s in your life this month!
In His love and mine,
Mama Kim
