I’ll never forget the time I heard a group of Christian leaders describing the way they were protecting the lives of baby girls in India! You see, it is common to favor a boy child over a girl child in India, even to the point of destroying the lives of pre-born and just-born baby girls. This practice is called femicide and is a tragic portrayal of just how sinful and selfish we can all become apart from the love of Christ.
But in this village, men and women gathered together to change this practice. Each time a baby girl is born, they plant a tree! That’s correct. A tree. Each time a baby girl is born they plant a tree that represents life and promises food for the future. Girls are now seen as a source of life and future hope.
Why a tree, you may ask? Excellent question, and let’s turn to the book of beginnings in the Bible to discover more about the significance and purpose of trees and their connection to our Everlasting God.
“Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and called there on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.”
Genesis 21:33
This verse is incredibly rich with biblical meaning. Not only is it the first mention of God as “El Olam,” which translates from Hebrew: the Everlasting God. And demonstrates how Abraham relied upon God with a fervent prayer life, “Called on the name of the Lord,” points us to the earliest reference to prayer in the Bible, Genesis 4:26, and doing so publicly and audibly was a declaration of faith and a dedication of this place to El Olam! BUT…
- It reminds us that all of nature, including trees, reveals that God is the giver of life!
- And it demonstrates that Abraham planned to stay “planted” in this place for years to come.
God wants to plant us deeply in the soil of His Word so that we can bear fruit, much fruit and more fruit – to last for eternity. WiW is devoted to Him and to our ministry partners. We will serve faithfully and help them develop the strategies and learn the skills that will equip and empower them to serve Christ so that they can replace poverty and injustice with dignity and purpose in Christ! You make this possible!
Yes! God is the Giver and Sustainer of life in all its forms. And throughout 2026, Women in the Window will focus our attention on becoming Fruitful and Flourishing. We will proclaim the goodness of God as we equip and empower women leaders to place their faith in Jesus, share the love of Jesus, and find practical and life-giving ways to help them become Fruitful and Flourishing through our partnerships.
From saving baby girls in India, veiled women in the Middle East, and women living in refugee camps in Africa, let’s continue to plant our lives, and theirs, in Christ to bear much fruit and flourish in His service!!
“When you bear (produce) much fruit, My Father is honored and glorified, and you show and prove yourselves to be true followers of Mine.”
John 15:8 Amplified Bible
