How do you define good health

INDIA– The scorching summer heat only compounds the many duties assigned to women and girls of India! This summer, temperatures exceeded 40 to 50 degrees Celsius in several states (that is, 100 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit).

Women are frequently assigned the daily duty of drawing water from a nearby well and hauling it the long distance back to their homes. No wonder they are less inclined to drink water throughout the day. Sadly, this only adds to their increased rate of cardiovascular disease, the highest cause of death among females in India!

Here is a brief story we received following our WiW health training in Preeti’s village:

Preeti is a field worker. She oversees 7 Community Transformation Groups (CTGs), each has approximately 30 members. Each member influences her own family, and in some cases, multiple families throughout her village.

“When I went to the well this morning, I had a new spring in my step. The other women and girls who walked along with me, and stopped to pump our water from the well as we have done countless times before, noticed the difference. “Why are you smiling?” they asked. I couldn’t wait to share all that I learned at our recent WiW training in my village.

I learned both spiritual and physical things, like how to study the Bible and how to eat a balanced diet and drink enough water, I said. Until now, I drink only a little water each day, but that is going to change, because there is a purpose for my life.

And, I learned about women in the Bible who really matter to God, the One True God. I learned that women are an essential part of His Story. And I know that I am, too!”

Preeti has already started putting the spiritual and physical lessons of this training into practice and multiplying this training to those in her 7 CTGs in her village and surrounding villages. The following illustration provides clarity on the manifold impact of defining good health.
