Gardens speak to us in more than one way. As a noun, a garden is a plot of ground where something is grown. As a verb, to garden is to cultivate with care—to plant, hoe, rake, and pull weeds so that growth can flourish. Both meanings capture the diligence and beauty involved in tending something with purpose.
My love for gardens began in childhood in Akron, Ohio, where a lovely flower garden filled our backyard with roses, daffodils, and the fragrance of spring. I remember the simple joy of playing near those blooms, hanging upside down from our swingset to enjoy the flowers; their beauty still stirs my imagination today.
There is something deeply wonderful about the way God created gardens—not only to delight our senses, but also to provide for our physical need for food.
Just as God has instituted a specific order for how we cooperate with Him in gardening: sowing seeds, watering plants and then fertilizing to maximize growth and productivity, in much the same way, He has a plan for sowing the Good News of the Gospel, making disciples who are prepared to multiply and make other disciples and even to develop leaders among the nations where the Gospel ground is hard and cold. His Word will not return void, and His love always bears much fruit.
“I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in Him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me (cut off from vital union with Me) you can do nothing.”
John 15:5

Every aspect of our ministry is based on His Word and the deeply personal yet profoundly practical ways that God addresses every aspect of life in His multi-faceted Word. We do this SO THAT together with our partners, we are fruitful, flourishing and fulfill the mission God entrusted to us: Equip and Empower women in the 10/40 window and beyond, replacing poverty and injustice with dignity and purpose in Christ.
