In Uganda, “He took her by the Hand…”

The battle was raging – with governmental interference, coupled by airline complications, the struggle was becoming exhausting. I began to consider the possibility that God simply didn’t want me to head to Kiryandango Refugee Settlement in Uganda this year. But just when it seemed impossible to secure the vital visa, at just what seemed to be the last vestige of hope, God’s deliverance came shining through. One of our colleagues from Uganda had an inside connection, and within minutes, the snafu of my visa was completely resolved, a new ticket was purchased, and I was on my way to Kiryandango, Uganda!

FAST FORWARD to Kiryandango Refugee Settlement in Uganda

As we gathered in the simple meeting room on the settlement, the women assembled – praises were lifted long, loud, and oh so sweet. We introduced ourselves, and shared where we served as leaders, and why this Leadership Development Training would be beneficial to our service. Many of the women leaders assembled were from South Sudan, and most had been victims of the long, painful war. War crimes against women and children were rampant throughout South Sudan, and sadly, some carried the scars and the oppressive practices with them to the refugee settlements. Many were war widows…

The first session of our leadership training began as we cracked open God’s Word to Acts chapter 9, utilizing our WiW inductive narrative Bible Study, and read the story of a young woman named Tabitha. She is described as someone, “who was always doing good and helping the poor.” (Acts 9:36) And those who surrounded her were, you guessed it, widows! These widows surrounded the body of Tabitha who had taken ill and died, crying and showing the apostle Peter the garments she had sewn just for them… Peter, following the example of Jesus, asked everyone to leave the room, knelt, and prayed.

“Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then he took her by the hand and helped her to her feet.” (Acts 9:41).

Fast forward to our final day of training and WiW certificate ceremony – as the women leaders lined up to proudly receive their certificates of completion, their pastors lined up too! They had come from various churches and even several denominations to award these certificates – the similarity wasn’t wasted on me – I noticed the extended hands of the pastors to these women who raised them up!

The New American Standard Bible says it this way, “he gave her his hand and raised her up” Acts 9:41

As Women in the Window International trains women leaders, transformation takes place on multiple levels. Women leaders are trained, they gain favor and respect in their communities and there is a ripple impact through their homes and families, churches and communities, across cultures and generations.

You and your support make this happen! Each time you pray, every time you give, you are the hero in this story – taking the women by the hand, you are lifting them up!

Remembering a friend who made waves of impact on WiW

Women and girls in the 10.40 window often live in a dry and dreary existence separated from the love of Christ.

Yet, they are thirsty for truth…

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and see the face of God?
Psalm 42:2

Yet, many women and girls in the world today have no access to the Good News of the Gospel that leads to this possession and confession of loving devotion to God. And if they do, they are forbidden from expressing it.

Women in the Window equips and empowers them with the life-changing truth that they are beloved in the eyes of God, and that they have a key role to play in every aspect of the world today.

Read more about how this was first imagined and how one man’s obedience, Pastor Ken Winter, influenced this movement from our Founding Director, Kim Kerr:

25 years ago, October 1, 2000, Pastor Ken led a team of men and women to serve the people of India, in the state of Punjab. I had the incredible privilege of being part of this team and it was there and then that God captivated my heart ❤ with the reality of what He has in mind for these beautiful girls and women – over time that little glimpse turned into the ministry we now know as Women in the Window International.

Pastor Ken was called home to heaven way too early – leaving his lovely wife, Lavonne; children and grandchildren, and the lives of so many impacted by his life of obedience and sacrificial service. I am one of those who was impacted – and as a result literally thousands of women have been reached, trained and sent out as missionaries to their own people groups with the love and power of the Gospel. We are delighted to offer you a free copy of this book written by Pastor Ken Winter to anyone who becomes a Soul Supporter (monthly donor) of Women in the Window!

Propelled by Pain, Empowered by Grace

I walked along the path from my tiny little room on the West African compound and as I turned the corner to head back into our training room, I paused to listen…

was that someone crying?

I peeked into the summer hut to see a young African woman kneeling down on the hard dirt floor, with arms upraised to heaven. I could barely hear her voice crying out to God. Her body was in a posture of repentance; her face was marked by tears. When I asked if I could enter, she said yes, but her posture and countenance did not change. Her name was Edna.

I asked Edna if there was something I could do, or say, or pray – to comfort her. She simply said, “I want to preach the Gospel. I must tell the Good News!”

We sat together for some time praying, calling out to God – my heart was warmed by her love for Christ. And my spirit pondered, “Am I that passionate for the Gospel? Have I found my way to my knees in brokenness over the sin all around and the need for others to know the love and care of Christ?”

I didn’t find an immediate answer to these questions, but what I did find was a beautiful young African woman who had been deeply hurt by others, but that hurt, that pain only propelled her to draw near to God, Who was, and still is, drawing near to her! And to mobilize all of her resources to share the Gospel!

THEN, she opened a small sewing school to train other women, multiplying her talent and using the leadership and spiritual formation tools she gained through attending further WiW trainings!

NOW, all of her sons (pictured here with Edna) have graduated, and Edna’s business is thriving. The lovely handheld purses, crossbody bags and expandable shopping bags we offer to anyone who becomes a Soul Supporter are all the original design of our one and only Edna!

Her Summer Hut encounter with Christ deepened her faith and strengthened her courage to continue to fearlessly and joyfully SHARE the Good News of the Gospel. Edna epitomizes the words of Proverbs 31:

Soul Care Retreat

Our 3rd annual soul care retreat has come – after much preparation and prayer – and gone for another year. Our labor of love was beautifully positioned at the Royal Poinciana Chapel, and well received by 98 attendees. We did just what the psalmist commands here:

“Sing to God, sing praises to His name; lift up a song for Him who rides through the deserts, whose name is the Lord, and exult before Him.” Psalm 68:4

Moments of praise, and prayer, punctuated our day together, and were lifted up as a praise offering to the One who protects fatherless and widows the world over. “A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, is God in His holy habitation.” Psalm 68:5

Nada Haddad (pictured to the right), women’s ministry leader with NEO Leaders, and a ministry partner of Women in the Window for seven years, brought us a fresh understanding of hospitality in the Middle East, and led us through the Essentials interpretation step, distilling each fact observed in Priscilla’s story into a timeless truth to cling to in times of uncertainty and cultural confusion.

We grappled and, at some moments, struggled to understand how these timeless truths are pertinent to our lives today as we applied them to real-life examples, asking and answering the question, “What would you do?”

By the end of the day, we were reminded that Priscilla shines brightly in this world of uncertainty, and her life story is an example of the myriad examples of “one another;” loving, caring for, persevering on behalf of, and being kind to one another.

Without exception, the highlight of this retreat remains the luxurious hour of silence and solitude. As women of various cultures and generations, spend time alone with God, we are all reminded that He alone is the Answer our heart longs to experience. And His generous love and care is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is our “home” and in Him alone we find rest:

“God makes a home for the lonely; He leads out the prisoners into prosperity, only the rebellious dwell in a parched land.” Psalm 68:6

Guess who’s coming to dinner – for 545 nights ????!?!

Wherever He Leads I’ll Go – this is the heartcry of our friend, Priscilla. Priscilla hails from Rome, Italy, but when she and her husband, Aquila, are forced to leave because of their Jewish faith, they land in Corinth. Corinth, the land of idolatry and insolence, was to be their new home. They took up their trade as tent-makers and welcomed the apostle Paul into their home – not for just one night but for 545 nights! The apostle Paul continued to minister “teaching the word of God among them.” Acts 18:11.

Can you imagine having the apostle Paul at the dinner table for 545 nights? The conversations, the times of deep study, and fervent prayer must have been an incredible blessing to Priscilla and Aquila. They grew in strength and knowledge. They fortified their souls and grew ever deeper in love with the Lord Jesus Christ – until they were asked to leave Corinth, enroute to Syria, and then posted in Ephesus.

What do we know about Ephesus? Another idolatrous city along the Roman road, but soon to become the first of the seven churches mentioned in the Revelation of Jesus Christ to John the beloved. Priscilla and Aquila settle down and serve Christ faithfully, amidst a diverse population and with devoted hearts.

Her story continues, and her accolades follow.  Priscilla finds herself serving night and day, and never wavering in her commitment to her husband, her community, but most of all to her Christ. She is the epitome of the Proverbs 31 woman—Proverbs 31:25-26, 30:

Strength and dignity are her clothing,
and she laughs at the time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom,
and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue…

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Apply:

How do you relate to Priscilla’s story? She is the quintessential woman of excellence with her words lining up accurately with the Word of God, her actions exemplifying the love of the Holy Spirit towards others, and her priorities and relationships flowing from the plans that our Father in Heaven has revealed. Together with Aquila, they became a living Gospel, and a picture of the Church and Christ, loving, serving, and caring for one another, with deep respect, admiration, service, and JOY!

“Wives, understand and support your husbands in ways that show your support for Christ. The husband provides leadership to his wife the way Christ does to his church, not by domineering but by cherishing. So just as the church submits to Christ as he exercises such leadership, wives should likewise submit to their husbands.” Ephesians 5:22-24 The Message Bible (Eugene Peterson)

But what about those of us who are single? Do we see anything of value in the way Priscilla lived with confidence and courage? By all means, YES! I love her undaunted courage characterized by quiet strength. I love her sense of adventure, taking her stand, and then taking her leave, as the Holy Spirit leads. I love her accurate use of Scripture, so much so, that the Holy Spirit calls upon her and her husband to instruct an eloquent man named Apollos, who then fearlessly refuted those who opposed Christ, “he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating by the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.” Acts 18:28.

But my favorite descriptor of Priscilla is found in Romans 16:3-4, as the Apostle Paul describes her and her husband, always together in spirit and service, as follows;

“Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who for my life risked their own necks, to whom not only do I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.”

If we believe the Bible to be the holy and inspired Word of God, and I do, then we believe the little word, “all” is intended just as its given in this context. Literally, and beautifully, Paul says that ALL of the churches give thanks to God for Prisca (her formal name, rather than Priscilla) and Aquila.

What can we do today – while it is still called today – to cause the Church of the Living God, to know that our labors are not in vain? To find courage, strength, and even joy? Let’s be ready to say YES!, however, whenever, wherever He leads!
